15 Hamburg Hotels in a Water Tower, a Gasworks and a Concert Hall
The Alster grande dame the Haerlin family ran for three generations, the liner passengers’ hotel where Bond was filmed, the 1791 inn Liebermann painted, and a hotel inside the Elbphilharmonie.

Hamburg puts its hotels where its trade was: on the Alster where the shipping lines lodged their passengers, in a foundry, a gasworks, a water tower and the police headquarters. This list has the Vier Jahreszeiten, run by the Haerlin family from 1897 to 1989, the Atlantic, built in 1909 for Hamburg-Amerika Linie passengers, the Louis C. Jacob, an inn on the Elbchaussee since 1791, and the Westin, inside the Elbphilharmonie with the concert halls.
The list is grouped by character, not ranked. Each hotel’s name links to its own site, so you see the current rate and book direct.
The grand hotels
Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten · Neustadt / Binnenalster
The Vier Jahreszeiten opened in 1897 when Friedrich Haerlin bought a small hotel on the Neuer Jungfernstieg; his family ran it for three generations, until 1989. Fairmont has managed it since 2007, and the Restaurant Haerlin received its third Michelin star in June 2025. The hotel calls itself Hamburg’s grande dame, with the wood-panelled Wohnhalle lobby and the Alster-facing rooms as its showpiece.
Hotel Atlantic Hamburg, Autograph Collection · St. Georg / Außenalster
The Atlantic opened in 1909 on the Außenalster to house first-class passengers of the Hamburg-Amerika Linie before they boarded their liners. Scenes of the 1997 James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies were filmed here, and the singer Udo Lindenberg has lived in a suite since 1995. Kempinski ran the house from 1957 until it joined Marriott’s Autograph Collection in January 2021.
Louis C. Jacob, Hamburg, Autograph Collection · Nienstedten / Elbchaussee
The Louis C. Jacob was founded in 1791 by the French pastry cook Daniel Louis Jacques as an inn on the Elbchaussee. Max Liebermann painted its Lindenterrasse in 1902 and 1903; the canvas hangs in the Hamburger Kunsthalle. After two centuries as an independent house it now flies Marriott’s Autograph Collection flag.
Reichshof Hamburg, Curio Collection by Hilton · St. Georg / Hauptbahnhof
The Reichshof opened in 1910 under the hotelier Anton Emil Langer directly opposite the Hauptbahnhof, and was billed as Germany’s largest hotel at the time, by the hotel’s account. It reopened in 2015 as the first Curio Collection by Hilton hotel in Europe after a full restoration of its Art Deco interiors.
The Fontenay · Rotherbaum / Außenalster
The Fontenay opened in March 2018 on the Außenalster, financed by the logistics billionaire Klaus-Michael Kühne and designed by Jan Störmer of Störmer Murphy and Partners. It is named after John Fontenay, the American shipbroker who bought this stretch of Alster shore in 1816. The restaurant Lakeside holds two Michelin stars.
Buildings reborn as hotels
Conrad Hamburg · Altstadt / Mönckebergstraße
The Conrad opened in September 2025 as Germany’s first Conrad hotel, inside the Levantehaus on Mönckebergstraße. The Levantehaus is a 1912 Kontorhaus built for the Deutsche Levante-Linie shipping company, and the same building housed the Park Hyatt Hamburg from 1998 until its conversion.
Tortue Hamburg · Neustadt / Stadthausbrücke
The Tortue opened in 2018 inside the Stadthöfe, the redeveloped former Stadthaus complex on Stadthausbrücke. The Stadthaus was Hamburg’s police headquarters and from 1933 the Gestapo headquarters; the Geschichtsort Stadthaus remembrance site now occupies part of the complex. The interiors by Kate Hume and Stephen Williams mix Hanseatic and French references.
The Nikolai Hotel Hamburg · Altstadt / Nikolaifleet
The Nikolai opened in 2017 as the Sir Nikolai, part of the Sircle Collection, in a nineteenth-century merchant’s building on the Nikolaifleet canal extended with a new wing, with interiors by the Amsterdam studio FG Stijl. Leonardo Hotels bought it in 2024 and renamed it The Nikolai Hamburg, the first Leonardo Limited Edition in Germany.
east Hotel Hamburg · St. Pauli
The east opened in 2004 in a former iron foundry on Simon-von-Utrecht-Straße in St Pauli. The Chicago designer Jordan Mozer shaped the curved, organic interiors, and the restaurant occupies the old foundry hall under ceilings several storeys high.
Gastwerk Hotel Hamburg · Bahrenfeld
The Gastwerk opened in 2000 in the brick halls of the former Bahrenfeld gasworks, built in 1897, by the hotel’s account. It was the Hamburg hotelier Kai Hollmann’s first hotel, and it calls itself Germany’s first loft hotel; parts of the old plant’s steel structure remain in the lobby.
Mövenpick Hotel Hamburg · Sternschanze
The Mövenpick is set inside the Schanzenpark water tower, built between 1907 and 1910 and described at its construction as the largest water tower in Europe. The tower went out of service in the 1950s and stood empty until the hotel opened in June 2007.
Harbour, river and St Pauli
Hotel Hafen Hamburg · St. Pauli / Landungsbrücken
The Hafen Hamburg’s main building went up in 1858 as a Seemannsheim, a home for sailors, on the Stintfang above the Landungsbrücken. Willi Bartels, the property owner known as the King of St Pauli, opened it as a hotel in 1983, by the hotel’s account. The Tower Bar on the top floor looks straight across the Elbe to the shipyards.
The Westin Hamburg · HafenCity / Elbphilharmonie
The Westin shares the Elbphilharmonie, the Herzog & de Meuron concert hall built on top of the 1960s Kaispeicher A warehouse, with the concert halls. It opened in November 2016, two months before the hall’s inaugural concert in January 2017. Guests enter through the Plaza, the public viewing platform thirty-seven metres above the harbour.
Empire Riverside Hotel · St. Pauli / Reeperbahn
The Empire Riverside opened in 2007 to a design by David Chipperfield Architects, a twenty-storey bronze-clad tower on the former Bavaria brewery site. It sits on Bernhard-Nocht-Straße between the Reeperbahn and the fish market, and the 20up bar on the top floor is one of Hamburg’s best-known harbour viewpoints.
stilwerk Strandhotel Blankenese · Blankenese
The Strandhotel Blankenese was built in 1902 in the Jugendstil style directly on the Elbe beach at Blankenese. The Hamburg design-store group stilwerk took it over and converted it into its second Hamburg boutique hotel, by the hotel’s account. The rooms face the river and the container ships heading for the port.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are these hotels ranked?
No. The groups sort them by character, and the order within each group carries no meaning.
What made a hotel interesting enough for this list?
A story. Every entry was a grand hotel with a documented past, a building that had another job first, or a house on the harbour or the river with a reason for being there. Comfort alone did not qualify.
Why are there no prices?
Rates change daily and a priced list goes stale in a month. Each hotel’s name links to its own site, so you see the current rate and book direct.
Should I stay on the Alster or by the harbour?
The Alster hotels put you in the quiet, moneyed centre, ten minutes’ walk from the Rathaus and the shopping streets. The harbour and St Pauli hotels put you on the Elbe with the ships, the fish market and the Reeperbahn, louder at night. The two are fifteen minutes apart by U-Bahn.
Which hotel puts me closest to the day trips on this site?
Most day trips from Hamburg run to Lübeck, to the North Sea coast and the Wadden Sea, to Lüneburg, or to Bremen. The St Georg hotels by the Hauptbahnhof sit closest to the trains and the coach pickups.
